Mallory weiss tear is upper GIT mucosal tear( submucosal AV plexus bleeding) caused by the forceful retching . It presents as vomiting, hematemesis, epigastric pain .so it means these are painful ,on the other hand Esophageal varices are the painless bleeding of dilated submucosal veins in lower 1/3 of esophagus due to portal hypertension.
