how long will it take to study for USMLE step 3?

Hi guys, how long will it take to prepare for USMLE step 3 and what are the materials used to study from?
And how can I apply for USMLE step3?

11/5/2012 4:51:50 PM
It depends.
Are you IMG or AMG. Are you in a clinical residency in the USA?
Are you in a surgical residency in the USA?
You are not in a residency at all and you are coming from overseas to take the test.
How long since you took Step 2, all levels?
If you are an AMG in a clinical residency only a month or two.
If you are an AMG in a surgical residency, two to three months.
If you are an IMG in a clinical residency, add one month.
If you are an IMG in a surgical residency, add two months.
If you are an IMG in no residency, 6 months minimum.
If your are an IMG who took the Step 2 more than six month ago, 8 months minimum.
This is if you are serious and responsible at the time to study.
If you are a kamikazee, none of this apply to you.
Good luck!!!
Regarding material to study: Kaplan+UW+Archer for CCS
Applying for Step 3. Go to the FSMB site and look at what States you can sit for the test. Why? Because there are States that demand you 2 or more years of ACGME approved residency program, sometimes 3 years requirement.
Some other States, not many, allow you to sit WITHOUT years of ACGME approved residency program, among them New York and Connecticut.
Important point, New York State allows you to sit for the Step 3, but, you have to pay for both, License application and Test.
Besides, you may pass the Step 3 in New York State, BUT, to get the Unrestricted License to PRACTICE independently, you need to be at least, 3 years in an ACGME APPROVED residency program. ONLY after that, New York State will issue a license. This is very important and you may have to look carefully at your main interest and situation.

MTB3 is OK but not enough and you have to read it many times to get something from it. Kaplan yellow notes(three volumes full of cases and explanations is much better, again, in my plain opinion)
To get Archer, just go to their website-www.ccsworkshop.com/payperview-, could be named Dr Red review also, buy time as a PPV(pay-per-view)on CCS, I think it is $ 88.00 and start practicing all that you can.
As a reminder, you have now 12 cases instead of 9, your time is much less to complete the management and it is in a rush, so, be VERY WELL prepared for this part, which is now, much more important than before for the USMLE grading. Before used to be 30% of the test, now is about 50% of the test.
Did you get it?
Besides,in 2014, the exam, as always, will be changed and Step 3 will be divided in two parts, Step 3 MCQ, and Step 3 CCS alone, with a lot more cases, and most important, administered separately from each other AND to pass, you MUST pass BOTH to be graded. So, instead of being $ 750 or so, it will be $1,500 dollars.
For your information in this topic, please, go to www.USMLE.org and read: April 2012 Announcement
Please, prepare hard and pass this 2012 or 2013 at the most, if you don't want the monster coming behind you for more.
Good luck!! And please don't waste time!!! Study hard NOW !!!!!
By the way, have you done your Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills)? If not, do it as soon as possible.

Good, but take Step 3 before starting residency, or, down the road, you will face difficulties, time constrictions and if you don't pass during the residency program, you will not be able to continue and the programs are not going to promote you and you will be in trouble.
It is OK that you applied and I wish you the best of luck, just want to warn you down the road. Please take Step 3 ASAP.
Are you in the USA or overseas?

You're welcome.
If you're overseas, you MUST take and pass Step 3 before anything else.
I even will stress more in passing Step 3 than in getting a position as a resident. Remember, once you are a resident, things change completely, you will have different obligations and mainly NO TIME to study Step 3, and you will be in a high risk of loosing everything, if you are in a residency program and you don't pass Step 3.
You can look for yourself and read about many sad stories of what I am talking about.
I saw, personally, many good residents, many good people with families who lost their residencies and jobs BECAUSE they COULDN'T PASS STEP 3.
Please, avoid that.
Please, PASS Step 3 NOW!!!!
